APPE SIGN UP SURVEY FOR 2026-2027 APPE STUDENTS

Some sites prefer all IPPE/APPE’s are coordinated by one designated person or department, so please check with your site coordinators before signing up.

  • Go to https://experiential.sop.pharmacy.wisc.edu/
  • Click on:  Intranet Login
  • Enter Net ID and Password
  •  Your Net ID must be in our database
  • Contact Tina Rundle at tina.rundle@wisc.edu if survey is not accessible
    • Click on “Experiential Portal”
    • In the left menu, select “Rotation Surveys for APPEs”
    • If you have more than one site to fill out, select the site you wish to fill out.  You will need to fill out a separate survey for each site.
    • Review all the information on the survey page and contact Tina Rundle at tina.rundle@wisc.edu for any information that needs to be updated.
    • Indicate the number of students you are willing to take for each block.
    • Indicate if housing is available at your site.  If yes, please list the name, phone number and email address of the contact person.
    • Click on “Submit Survey” by August 31, 2025.

    APPE-RESIDENCY TRACK

    The UW School of Pharmacy offers a longitudinal APPE program called the APPE –Residency Track (APPE-RT).  This program is designed for students looking to pursue post-graduate training.  Students complete the four required APPEs and two elective APPEs at one facility. Sites interested in participating in the APPE-RT may contact Mara Kieser at mara.kieser@wisc.edu by August 31, 2025 with the following information:

    LEARNING ENVIRONMENT (Required)
    The office of Experiential Education needs to confirm the location of student learning for each site (see definitions below for Onsite, Remote or Hybrid).  The primary contact must complete the learning environment option found on the site description. 

    Onsite:  Rotation is completed fully onsite
    Remote:  Rotation is completed remotely
    Hybrid:  Rotation is completed on site and remotely (even if only one day remotely)

    The Office of Experiential Education wants to ensure accurate site/health requirements are listed for each site.  Please contact Amanda Watter at amanda.watter@wisc.edu if your facility has recently updated or added any site/health requirements for students.  This includes COVID-19 vaccine information.

    Please review and update your site description information for each site as needed.  Please make the changes and Click on submit changes.  Students signing up for APPEs will be reviewing this information.

    Did you know that you can add videos and PDFS to your site descriptions?  It’s a great way to capture the students’ attention.

    APPE COURSES

    Students in the final year of the curriculum participate in APPE courses.  The APPE courses are:

    • 740 – Acute Pharmaceutical Care APPE

    Students are required to complete 1 rotation in a hospital based – general medicine setting.  This rotation focuses on patient care in the acute care setting. 

    • 742 – Health System Pharmacy Practice APPE

    Students are required to complete 1 rotation in a hospital-based setting.  This rotation focuses on pharmacy management, distributive functions, safety and quality, and professional development in a hospital setting. 

    OF NOTE: 740 and 742 will be offered in a back-to-back block pairing.  

    • 741 – Ambulatory Pharmaceutical Care APPE

    Students are required to complete 1 rotation in an outpatient pharmacy setting with direct patient care services. This rotation focuses on patient-centered care, promotion of health and wellness, and population-based care in the ambulatory care setting.    

    • 743 – Community Pharmacy Practice APPE

    Students are required to complete 1 rotation in an outpatient pharmacy setting, (e.g.: outpatient hospital pharmacy, community pharmacy, HMO pharmacy, or chain pharmacy); This rotation focuses on medication-use systems, safety and quality in the outpatient setting. 

    OF NOTE: 741 and 743 will be offered in a back-to-back block pairing.

    • 760 – Elective Pharmacy APPE

    Students are required to complete three or four elective APPE rotations.  Rotations may be in the inpatient, outpatient, or a non-traditional setting and may involve patient care or non-patient care.  Students focus on learning the pharmacist roles in the elective rotation setting.

    • 761 – International Pharmacy APPE

    This course is offered to students completing an APPE in another country from their home country.  It is offered as an elective option.  The pharmacy setting may be in the inpatient, outpatient, or a non-traditional setting and may involve patient care or non-patient care. Students focus on learning the pharmacist roles in the elective rotation setting.  UW students may complete one international pharmacy APPE.

    BLOCK/MODULE DATES 2026-2027

    The experiential calendar is divided into eight blocks.  There are two experiential blocks in the summer, three experiential blocks in the fall, and three experiential blocks in the spring.  APPE students must complete a minimum of seven blocks.   Please see below for the 2026-2027 experiential dates.

    Block 3 Aug 10 – Sep 18, 2026
    Block 4 Sept 21 – Oct 30, 2026
    Block 5 Nov 2 – Dec 18, 2026
    Block 6 Jan 4 – Feb 12, 2027
    Block 7 Feb 15 – March 26, 2027
    Block 8 March 29 – May 6, 2027

    APPE PAYMENT INFORMATION

    Payment for in-state sites will be $250 per six-week APPE student rotation.  In addition, we provide online CE credit opportunities for precepting students.  We appreciate your continued support of training student pharmacists. 

    APPE HOURS

    As a reminder, APPEs are full-time experiences, (i.e. a minimum of forty hours per week, five days per week).  Hours do not include lunch breaks or breaks, travel to the site from home, or travel home from the site.   It is important that the student is participating in APPE activities at least 40 hours per week, as this is the number of hours we report to the Pharmacy Examining Board.

    ADDITIONAL REMINDERS

    • Each year we review and update our database.   If a preceptor has not signed up to take students in two consecutive years, the preceptor will be dropped from the database.
    • A separate sign up for introductory rotations will start in November.
