426 Clinical Instructor Information 2023-2024

January 5, 2024

Hello 426 Clinical Instructors:

Thank you for precepting a first-year student during their community IPPE.

Your student will be spending 40 hours at your community pharmacy site during one of the following weeks:

  • January 1 – January 5, 2024
  • January 8 – January 12, 2024
  • January 15 – January 19, 2024
  • March 25 – March 29, 2024

During your student’s time at your site, they will have a checklist and guided worksheet. Each day has a suggested theme but the activities can be completed at any time or any day that is convenient. The checklist and guided worksheet are posted on the clerkship webpage under the 426 course.

  • Day #1: Getting to know your pharmacy and pharmacist, medication dispensing workflow, insurance
  • Day #2: Patient consultation and pharmacist services
  • Day #3: Drug information resources and self-care
  • Day #4: Health literacy
  • Day #5: Getting to know your pharmacist – interprofessional interactions, cultural sensitivity, ethics, and healthcare disparities

Throughout the rotation, students can complete the following:

  • Getting to know the top 100 drugs (~20 drugs per day)
  • Reflection questions
  • Community outreach activity
    • Students are required to complete a community outreach activity, for about 4-8 hours of time. The community outreach activity should involve activities that reach the pharmacy’s patients and build community connections. The activity could include health education, promotion, or screening (e.g., immunizations, point-of-care testing, disease screenings, updating educational materials, etc.). More information about this activity and example activities are located in the 426 worksheet posted on the clerkship website.
    • After your student completes the activity, please fill out the community outreach activity evaluation form in the “Evaluate Student/Record Grades” in the grading record.
  • If your student has completed all of the checklist items and guided worksheet, consider having them work on other activities in your pharmacy. Some ideas are included in the 426 worksheet.

Please note: first-year students have taken the required immunizations course and a self-care/non-prescription medicines course already this fall semester. Students must still be under your direct supervision as they are not considered interns in the state of Wisconsin.

Your student will be contacting you at least 2 weeks prior to the start of their rotation. Please be on the lookout for an email from your student(s) and respond promptly. We recommend sharing your dress code policy and other important information (i.e., lunch, parking, etc.).

Thank you again for precepting our students during their first IPPE experience!
